What is IELTS?

IELTS is an abbreviation for the International English Language Testing System. IELTS is a 3 hours of exam (Listening, Reading and writing) and the score is 0-9 band. The aim of IELTS examination is to judge the candidate’s proficiency of English language. IELTS examination assesses 4 skills of the test taker, which are IELTS Reading, IELTS Listening, IELTS Writing and IELTS Speaking. IELTS test is taken by those who want to study or work as well as settle in a foreign country. Countries like Canada, Australia, USA, UK and New Zealand mainly require IELTS score where English is the medium of communication. The IELTS exam score is recognised in over 140 countries. IELTS offers two modules, IELTS – Academic module for university admission and IELTS – General module for immigration. IDP Australia conducts IELTS exam in India and an IELTS candidate can take more than one tests till he gets required score. IDP offers IELTS test in two versions, Computer delivered IELTS and Pen & Paper delivered IELTS. The mostly popular Pen & Paper delivered version of IELTS test is held 4 times a month on Saturday generally. The fee for the test is 15,500 INR as of now. The recently introduced Computer delivered IELTS is held in 3 time slots every day, 7 days a week.

IELTS Listening:

IELTS Listening continues about 30 minutes. It is distributed into four segments, each of which is played in headsets provided to each student during the IELTS test. Each section could consist of a dialogue or a monologue. The audio is played only once, and the questions must be answered while listening. Students are provided with enough time to recheck their answers.

IELTS Reading:

IELTS Reading exam goes on for 60 minutes. It is different for academic IELTS and IELTS general module. Both tests are divided into three divisions. The complexity of each segment goes on increasing.

IELTS Writing:

IELTS Writing is a 60 minutes long test where the students can pick between an IELTS Academic Module and an IELTS General Training Module as per the requirement. It is mandatory for each student to complete two tasks of different writing styles. No options are provided for the topics to be attempted.

IELTS Speaking:

IELTS Speaking test is a one-to-one dialogue with a competent examiner. The IELTS speaking interview is recorded and allocated into three different parts: an introduction about the candidate, an individual cue card questions round in which the candidate has to speak for one or two minutes on a particular topic, and a mutual conversation thematically associated to the individual speaking ability during a conversation. The total time of the IELTS speaking test is about 11-15 minutes.

Scoring

IELTS scores are assigned between 0 to 9 band in each IELTS module with the chance of getting a .5 score. The overall IELTS band score is counted as an average of each section that is IELTS listening, IELTS reading, IELTS writing and IELTS speaking. Each skill is counted between 0 to 9 bands with an overall score in the same range.

IELTS test result is known as the Test Report Form (TRF). The result of Computer-delivered IELTS will be available online within 3 to 5 days after your test date and Paper-based IELTS results will be available on the 13th day after the test.

The result of IELTS is valid for 2 years.
