Who Can Become Sponsor or Eligibility to Sponsor
1) Age of sponsor must be at least 18 years
2) Sponsor must be Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
3) If you are a Canadian Citizen living outside Canada then must show your plan to live in Canada when person who you sponsored will become PR and if sponsor is Permanent Resident of Canada then must be residing in Canada to be eligible to Sponsor
4) Provide proof of financial capability of Sponsor
5) Capable and willing to fulfill basic financial needs of yourself and spouse or partner and/or dependent child and for this sponsor is are required to sign undertaking
6) If you are sponsoring your Spouse or common law partner or Conjugal partner then length of undertaking is for 3 years
7) If you are sponsoring dependent child under age 22 then length of undertaking is 10 years from the day your dependent child become PR or until child becomes 22 years old whichever is earlier.
8) If you are sponsoring a dependent child over age 22 then length undertaking is 3 years from day your dependent child becomes PR.
Types of sponsorship:
1) Inland Sponsorship
2) Outland Sponsorship
Who you can sponsor
You can sponsor your Spouse, Common-law partner, conjugal partner (can be either sex) or Dependent Children in Canada and overseas.
1) If want to sponsor your Spouse then your spouse must be
- Legally married and
- At least 18 years old or Above
2) If you want to sponsor your Common Law partner then
- Age of common law partner must be at least 18 years
- Is not legally married to you
- Has been living with you for at least 12 consecutive months without any long periods apart
- Need proof of common law relationship
Common law relationship is considered as marriage like relationship in Canada by Canadian Immigration Law.
3) If you want to sponsor your Conjugal Partner then
- Age of conjugal partner must be at least 18 years
- Not legally married or in common law relationship with you
- In a relationship with you for at least 1 year
- lives outside Canada
- Due to legal and Immigration reasons cant marry or live with you in their country
- Need to provide proofs related to it
4) If you want to sponsor your Dependent children then
Whom you can sponsor as dependent children
- Your own child
- Your spouse or partner and their dependent child
Both of these requirements must be fulfilled by dependent child to qualify as dependent
- Under age 22
- Don’t have spouse or common law partner
Children age 22 years or older qualify as dependent children only if both the requirements are met –
- Not able to support themselves due to reasons of mental ability or physical condition
- They have depended on their parents for financial support since before the age of 22
How to apply for the program
1) Person want to sponsor must apply to become a sponsor. 2) Your spouse, partner or child must apply for permanent residence.
Both the sponsorship and the permanent residence applications need to be send at the same time. You must apply online.
You may be eligible to apply open work permit if
- you live in Canada with the person sponsoring you
- you got an acknowledgement of receipt letter that says your permanent residence application is being processed
- If you already have work permit, you may continue working until your work permit is valid
Sponsored person will be required to submit other documents as per instruction by IRCC during processing like Medical, bio metrics and others as requested.
Processing Fees
Sponsor your spouse or partner: $ 1080 CAN
(Sponsorship fees – $ 75, Principal applicant processing fee $ 490 CAN, Right Of Permanent Residence Fee $515 CAN)
Sponsor dependent child – $ 155 CAN (per child per)
Processing Time
Processing time for spouse or partner application is approx..13 months.
Processing time for child: varies by country
After approval sponsored applicant will get Confirmation of Permanent Residency to Canada.
