A Canadian Super Visa is a type of temporary resident visa that allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to visit Canada for extended periods. It’s like any other multiple-entry visa that is valid for up to the validity of your passport. This means that parents can visit multiple times within the valid visa period as long as each trip is less than 5 or up to 5 years.
This type of visa allows parents or grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time with an opportunity to apply for an extension of an additional 2 years at a time if eligible. Only parents or grandparents can apply for this kind of visa. Dependents of parents or grandparents are not eligible to apply for a super visa.
If parents or grandparents want to visit Canada for less than six months then they should apply for a normal visitor visa.
Eligibility Criteria:
- You are the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- Must have a Letter of invitation from your child or grandchild residing in Canada stating the number of households.
- Have a written promise of financial support from your child or grandchild for the length of your stay in Canada.
- Proof that your child or grandchild meets MNI (minimum Necessary Income)
- Must have proof of private medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company and must
- be paid in full or in installments with a deposit
- be valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry to Canada
- have emergency coverage of at least $100,000 per person
- Include coverage of healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation
Private health Insurance must be valid for each time you enter Canada. Border service officer may ask you to see it when you enter Canada.
Note: IRCC will provide more information on approved insurance companies outside Canada in coming months.
Parents and grandparents must also:
- Be outside Canada when applying for a super visa
- Proof that you passed immigration medical exam
- Allowed to enter Canada
Minimum Income Requirements:
Your child or grandchild and their households must meet minimum necessary income requirement to invite parents and grandparents on the super visa. It is also called the “Low Income Cut Off ’’ (LICO).The minimum necessary income requirements will be calculated depending on the size of the family. Your child or grandchild must prove that they meet the minimum necessary income requirement. Income Table 2023.

Documents to prove minimum necessary income –
- Notice of Assessment (NOA) or T4 /T1 for the most recent year
- Employment Insurance Statements
- Employment letter from employer mentioning date of hiring, salary, job title and description
- Employment pay stubs
- Bank statements
How to Apply: Apply online.
Visa Fee: The visa fee is $100 CAD per person.
Biometric fee: The biometric fee is $85 CAD per person.
Processing Time: 53 Days (It may vary depending upon number of files received by IRCC and complexity of the file)
The applicant must be able to demonstrate that their visit to Canada is genuine and that they will leave Canada at the end of their visit. There are a number of factors the IRCC will consider before making a decision.
